Example Events Containing a Muon

Muons are the only type of particle that have a high probability of being able to pass through all the calorimeters and leave signals in the muon chambers. The signals the particle produces in the muon chambers are shown as the yellow crosses and the red arrow in the following pictures.

If a particle travels in a direction close to the axis of the cylinder it passes out of the flat end of the cylinder. In order to identify such particles there are calorimeters and muon chambers also in this region of the detector, which we call the "end-cap". Here is an example of a muon in the end-cap region.

For particles in the end-cap region it is generally much easier to see what is going on by looking at the side view.
